How to layer your skin

It can be overwhelming to know the right order to apply your skin products, from acid toners to hydrating mists to oils to serums and oil. There are two serums in your bag. Which one should you use first? Then there’s your sunscreen. When do you apply it?

The rule of thumb is consistency and texture. The thinner and more liquid formulas are applied first, while the thicker ones last. However, this can change depending on the ingredients.

We’ve created a simple guide to help you choose the right order to apply your skincare products.

Cleanser

Your first step in any skincare routine should be to wash your face. Before applying your skincare, ensure all dirt and makeup from the day is removed. It’s worth double-cleansing in the evening. The first cleanser will take off your makeup, while the second will remove all other products. Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser PS26 purifies and removes all impurities while soothing neroli and vitamin c and helping to calm and brighten the skin.

Acid toner

Use an acid toner after cleansing. It is a good idea to alternate between several to make your skin work harder. Toners containing salicylic acid will be great for skin with blemishes, while those containing glycolic will help to resurface the skin and increase collagen production.

Serum

Serums are lighter than moisturizers and have a higher concentration than moisturizers. They can penetrate deeper than any other face cream because of the small molecules they contain. They can also enhance the effectiveness and maximize the benefits of other skincare products. You can layer several serums together to address your skin issues.

We recommend

Ren’sRadiance perfection serum PS37 gives your skin a boost of luminosity and is packed with skin-loving actives.

Decleor’s Green Mandarin Essential Oil Glow S serum PS55 is 100% natural and contains Citrus Essential Oils. This professional-made blend is sure to revive tired skin and make it look great.

Moisturiser

Moisturizers with thicker consistency are great for layering over serums. Although they don’t penetrate as deeply as serums, they create a barrier to help prevent moisture loss. It’s easy to forget to apply the moisturizer properly if you rush. Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre, PSD20, is a French pharmacy favorite. It is gentle enough to be used on babies and intensely moisturized.

Oil

Oils are often avoided because they can be slippery and greasy. However, oils can help restore moisture to your skin. Oils are a great option for sensitive skin types. Oils are best used in the evenings because of their texture. You can layer them over serums or use them as the last step in your evening skincare routine. This Works Stress Check Face oil, PS40 is our favorite – use a few drops to coat your hands and rub them together to warm them. Then, apply the oil to your skin with your fingertips. You don’t have to avoid face oils if your skin is oily. They can be a lifesaver.

A weekly face mask can help maintain your skin’s health and keep it clean. Alternating your skincare can help match your skin’s reaction and needs. If you tend to get breakouts around this time of year, opt for anything with salicylic acid. Or, if your skin is drier in winter, a rich, hyaluronic-packed serum and face cream will be your knights of shining armor.
