Vaginal Rejuvenation Sydney Clinic and Vaginal Tightening
We are all different downstairs and healthy vulvas (the external female genital organs) come in many different shapes, sizes and colours. However, despite this variation, many women remain dissatisfied with the cosmetic appearance of their vulva. If uncertain, here is a useful site to explain what is “normal”.
Adding to this, as a woman’s body experiences pregnancy, childbirth, weight changes or as a result of natural ageing, the internal tissue of the vagina tends to weaken and lose tone and the external vulva tissue may stretch, resulting in a condition known as Vaginal Relaxation Syndrome (VRS). VRS tends to commence in women from the ages of 30-40 years old. Due to a continual decline in collagen regeneration, the vagina wall gradually changes from a strong, spongy, lubricated lining, to one with a thin, frail and dry lining. Collagen is the protein essential for strengthening connective tissue in all parts of the body, including the vagina.
Other symptoms, such as light bladder leakage, mild prolapse and perineal scarring (sometimes painful) are all common consequences of childbirth and ageing.
If you worry about vaginal tightening, lubrication or simply wish to improve the cosmetic appearance of your vagina, the MonaLisa Touch (internal) and the DOT laser (external) may be suitable procedures for you.
WHO IS A GOOD PATIENT?
The MonaLisa Touch internal laser treatment is suitable for those who are seeking vaginal tightening or vulva rejuvenation, without surgery. It is ideal for women who experience common post-birth symptoms such as loss of vaginal tone, dryness mild prolapse and light bladder leakage.
WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?
The MonaLisa Touch triggers a regeneration of tissue that helps restore your vagina to its younger, elastic and healthy functioning state. Our patients report noticeable tightening of vaginal tissue, better lubrication and much improved urinary continence.
The external DOT laser firms and improves the texture of vulva tissue, offering a non-surgical alternative to Labiaplasty. The DOT laser is also effective at softening and flattening perineal scarring and may be useful in treating resistant Lichen Sclerosus.
* Note – patient results may vary depending upon extent of symptoms.
If you are concerned about lost tissue volume in the outer labia lips, this can be restored through injection of cosmetic dermal filler to plump and firm the tissue. For more information, please send us an enquiry.
HOW DO THE TREATMENTS WORK?
MonaLisa Touch works by stimulating the body’s regenerative processes to create more hydrated and healthy cells and to improve the blood supply within the vaginal walls. This has a direct effect on the integrity and elasticity of the vaginal tissue and increases the acidity of the vagina to more normal levels. The overall effect is a tightening of the vaginal canal, improved lubrication, enhanced sensitivity and a healthy pH environment, reducing infections and discharge such as thrush and UTIs.
The equipment is uniquely designed to direct thousands of tiny beams (or DOTs) of energy and heat directly into the surface layer of the vaginal wall using a slim, smooth hand-piece that can be gently inserted inside the vaginal canal. This delivery of heat into the epithelium naturally triggers the regenerative processes of the vaginal surface and connective tissue, by stimulating the activity of specialised cells that create elastin and collagen – the building blocks of all healthy tissue. DOT laser for external vulva and scar tissue is more cosmetic and works in the same way as it does for CO2 DOT skin rejuvenation treatments. The laser parameters are uniquely adjusted to ensure your skin condition is addressed appropriately.
YOUR VAGINAL REJUVENATION EXPERIENCE?
You will meet with our doctor to discuss your symptoms and concerns and to ensure that you are suitable for the MonaLisa Touch and/or DOT laser. For MonaLisa Touch, we require you to have a normal and up-to-date pap smear result and no other contraindications (see below). If deemed suitable, you may proceed with your first treatment immediately after the consultation. There is no advance preparation required.
Whilst most women respond well to the recommended 3-session treatment program, more advanced symptoms may require 4 or 5 sessions.
If we observe any unusual conditions or contraindications, we will address these prior to treatment or refer you to a specialist.
MonaLisa Touch is quick and painless treatment; the whole process takes no more than 15 minutes.
Any moisture will be swabbed from your vaginal canal and a smooth, sterile probe gently inserted. Whilst the laser is operating, there is a mild vibrating sensation but you require no analgesia and the treatment is relatively comfortable, with minimal side effects. You will be supported by our physician and nurses during your procedure to ensure the highest standards of patient care and satisfaction.
External DOT laser requires application of a numbing cream before treatment and is also well tolerated, albeit a bit more sensitive than the internal treatment. The area may feel a little warm for an hour or two, but is not painful.
There is no downtime with MonaLisa Touch internal laser treatment, patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately. The external DOT laser also has no downtime, although some patients mention some tenderness or dryness for a couple days until the new skin heals over and strengthens. We recommend no intercourse, strenuous activity or exposure to spa baths/public pools for 3-5 days.
HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?
Some patients report that the Mona Lisa Touch and DOT produces vaginal tightening, contraction and improved lubrication within days, however, the effects are more noticeable after a few weeks with the remodelling of collagen in the vaginal mucosa and continue progressively for 6 months.
The extent of vaginal tightening, regeneration and duration varies between individual patients. Many patients have improvement for 12-18 months with no further intervention, however, a single annual treatment session is recommended to extend the beneficial results.
For longer lasting results, women may wish to research and consider vaginal reconstructive surgery options. We provide surgical options from our Perth clinic only, see www.academydayhospital.com.au
